Mackay Catholic Debutante Ball

Last Friday the Mackay Catholic Debutante Ball was held at North Mackay Bowls Club. The evening was a great success with debs and partners from both St Patrick’s and Holy Spirit Colleges. Father John Grace (Diocesan Administrator) received the debs and their partners and addressed all assembled encouraging our young people with a challenge from Pope Francis. He concluded by saying …

Strive hard to preserve the beauty which you model this evening. The garments, the gowns and suits, will be put aside. ln their place make yourselves beautiful people from within and continue to win our warmest admiration.

Special thanks to the Ball committee and especially to Mrs Berenice Wright for her involvement in this event over many years.deb

Queensland Basketball Selection

Congratulations to Year 11, student Tendekai Machando who has been selected in the Queensland 18 years Basketball team following last week’s state titles. Tendekai was a representative of the 18 years Capricornia team that was Runner-up in the carnival which is an outstanding result. Also representing St Pat’s in the Capricornia team were Taylor Teske, Jesse Milburn and Toby Doevendans. Tendekai will now represent Queensland at the National titles which will be held in Townsville next term. Special mention must also be made of Year 12 student Cody Blucher who attended the state titles as a referee. Well done boys.

Debutantes’ Ball

We wish all our Debs and partners a great night on Friday. Much preparation has gone into this evening and we are especially grateful to the women and men from the Catholic parishes of Mackay who support this event attending the weekly training sessions, teaching our students how to dance, and how to attend a formal evening. We are especially thankful for the support of Fr John Grace – our Diocesan Administrator who will receive the debutantes and their partners. Mrs Berenice Wright has been the Ball Chairperson/Secretary for many years and we are very grateful for her energy, drive and enthusiasm for the Debutantes’ Ball.

Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Fund (QATSIF) Scholarships

At a small function on Monday night four students – Marli Allan, Tia Harrison, Shakira Williams and Lauren Burt were presented with certificates for their QATSIF scholarships. The scholarships available at the college total $28000. The funds for these scholarships come out of a settlement between the Queensland Government and indigenous peoples regarding unpaid wages to indigenous workers in the twentieth century. Students receiving the scholarship are obliged to maintain high attendance and to work towards completing their Queensland Certificate of Education. Thank you Ms Bree Sinn and Ms Deb Millar for their organisation of the evening.

At assembly this morning Mr John Boumford, Mr Matthew Schulze and Mr Morrie Fatnowna announced the college team that will go to the Gold Coast for the Confraternity Rugby League Carnival during the first week of the school holidays. This is a prestigious carnival and a number of current NRL players played for St Patrick’s in this carnival in recent years. We wish them well in their training as they prepare for this carnival.
