African Drumming Workshop with NII ARMAH

On Monday afternoon, seven of our percussion students, six of our staff and five little musicians (from different primary schools) had the fortunate opportunity to partake in an African drumming (and singing!) workshop with the rhythmical Nii Armah.

We learnt how to play the three main timbres of the Djembe (traditional drum from West Africa), as well as different drumming patterns. We even sang a traditional African folk song, which proved to be quite challenging when we were asked to drum the different rhythms as we sang! Despite this, Nii said that we were all very fast learners. Thank you Nii, for coming to our school. We all enjoyed your time with us, and we hope you did too!

Mackay Catholic Debutante Ball

Last Friday the Mackay Catholic Debutante Ball was held at North Mackay Bowls Club. The evening was a great success with debs and partners from both St Patrick’s and Holy Spirit Colleges. Father John Grace (Diocesan Administrator) received the debs and their partners and addressed all assembled encouraging our young people with a challenge from Pope Francis. He concluded by saying …

Strive hard to preserve the beauty which you model this evening. The garments, the gowns and suits, will be put aside. ln their place make yourselves beautiful people from within and continue to win our warmest admiration.

Special thanks to the Ball committee and especially to Mrs Berenice Wright for her involvement in this event over many years.deb

Mackay Marina Run

It was great to see many of our students volunteering to support the Marina Run. The proceeds of this charity event go to the Leukaemia Foundation. This illness has touched many lives within our community. Thank you to those who sponsored me in this event. We raised $289 for the foundation. For the record I did complete the half marathon, well back in the field in 2:21:50.

Queensland Basketball Selection

Congratulations to Year 11, student Tendekai Machando who has been selected in the Queensland 18 years Basketball team following last week’s state titles. Tendekai was a representative of the 18 years Capricornia team that was Runner-up in the carnival which is an outstanding result. Also representing St Pat’s in the Capricornia team were Taylor Teske, Jesse Milburn and Toby Doevendans. Tendekai will now represent Queensland at the National titles which will be held in Townsville next term. Special mention must also be made of Year 12 student Cody Blucher who attended the state titles as a referee. Well done boys.
